Ehomaki roll is eaten during setsubun which is on February 3.
The left side is an Ehomaki roll.
Almost all people eat it without cutting.
I and my family do not like eating whole Ehomaki rolls.
We cut it before eating.
Setsubun
Setsubun is a kind of traditional event in Japan. The original is China. The day is changing season winter to spring. People prayed for their health on the day because February was still cold, so people caught a cold and other illnesses.
Nowadays almost all Japanese people eat Ehomaki roll which is a kind of sushi. Many shops like supermarkets, convenience stores and deli shops make and sell Ehomaki rolls.
When I was a child, I did mamemaki(sowing beans).
Mamemaki is a traditional event that people throw beans as same as their ages and pray for avoid demons and call in good god.
Generary soy beans often were used on mamemaki, but people live in Hokkaido use penats.
We ate three Ehomaki rolls on 2016.
Ehomaki roll cakes
Many sweets shops produce and sell roll cakes for setsubun.
It does not affect avoiding demons.
